Technology – Scripting – Webdesign – Web2.0 – Social Media – IT Migrations – SCCM – Active Directory – Networking – IT Transitions – Server 2008 R2 – PowerShell – IT in general … are just some words that appear more than often in my blog posts.
Welcome to hican.net! A blog about all the things that have my interest, keep me up at night, help me in doing my job and above all provide me topics to talk about with passion.
Since you’ve come to the “About” section, I will just assume (even though assumption is the mother of all f*** ups) you want to know a little more about me and my blog. Let me start with a short introduction about myself. If I (hopefully) still have your attention towards the end, I will tell you why I started this blog and what I hope it can bring you.
Who am I?
My name is Marius a.k.a. Hican (hence the name hican.net, but we come to that later) and I am roaming around this planet for some time now. I have mostly done this in The Netherlands, but people (and probably satellites) have also seen me in Mexico, Bali, England, USA, Belize and some more very nice places.
During my “roaming around” I enjoyed (and still doing that) the scenery and to specialize in practicing IT (or as some of you will say: ICT). I mostly concentrated on large IT migrations and transitions. These projects cover a very broad area and contain anything between: upgrading 10000+ client machines from Windows XP to Windows 7 and writing a complete set of automation scripts which upgrade SMS 2003 to SCCM 2007 and clean-up unused licensed applications.
That was a mouth full and, combined with the list at the top, they provide a nice base of interesting topics to start a blog. Though these things are not the actual reason I started this blog. The actual reason contains all these things, but is just a little bit “simpler” and … sillier. More about this later, because I want to elaborate a bit more about myself and my interests. I sure know how to build the tension don’t I? ![]()
What are my interests? (random order)
- Technology: Obviously. I like everything from old to new. My computer “madness” started on a good ol’ 386DX2 (Intel 80386 for the hardcore fans). After that I slowly worked my way to the “top” which I refer to as my current system: AMD Phenom II X4 940 3.00 GHz Gamer Edition (I will probably get some comments on this, because it has aged already).
I enjoyed the way getting there, but nowadays I especially find a lot of fun in all the new things: my Android Phone, my Wireless N-routing setup, Windows 8 Beta, Apple stuffz and mooore. - Travelling: You could have guessed this was next don’t you? I like to see as much of the world as possible. This isn’t tied to the world though. If I would have the possibility to make giant jumps on the moon or have a nice holiday home in a world of Pandora (yes, I am talking about Avatar), I would do it right away. For now I keep travelling around our nice globe and enjoy the scenery and try to learn some languages.
- Music: We just can’t live without music! I like anything from the 60′s to the 90′s and even some in our current era. To name a few I like: Rolling Stones, Golden Earring, Depeche Mode, Metallica, Michael Jackson, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Maroon 5, Eminem, John Legend, Fedde Le Grand, Outwork, Queen and many, many more. Every mood brings (and requires) it’s own style of music. Just like now, while I am writing my blog, I like to listen to… nothing basically. I really can’t concentrate on writing when I have music on
- Sports: I sit behind a computer every day, so staying in shape is quite important. I try to sport 3 times a week, but because of day-to-day obligations this can be a hassle sometimes. Anyway, I like (how surprising) many different kind of sports: Soccer, American Football, Formula 1, K-1, Ice Hockey, etcetera. Currently I am doing a workout program which includes some cardio, weightlifting and a very heavy cycle program. Besides that I occasionally enjoy some kickboxing.
- Games and Design: I combined these two, because I like to switch between them from day to day. I still enjoy gaming a bunch. I am a big fan of MMO’s and I played quite a lot of them, like: Ragnarok Online, Lineage I and II, World of Warcraft and some more. I hope in the future to play a good new Final Fantasy again (even though we already had the best with FFVII).
Every game I do, I play by the name of Hican or HicanNL. The reason for this (told you I would explain it a “bit” later) goes way back to 1999 when the best shooter up till date was launched: Unreal Tournament. Some friends and me started playing this and we found it important to come up with a “cool” nickname. I have always been a fan of the movie ‘The Last of the Mohicans’ so I started to play as Mohican. By that time I didn’t know that half of the world had that idea
I decided to cut off the Mo part and the name Hican was born. I have played with that name ever since. Strangely enough this name is almost never in use, but if it is I just use HicanNL (NL standing for NetherLands, my homebase). I kept this name for basically anything (not only gaming), so I often get called Hican by my friends in real life as well!
Designing is one of my other hobbies and I like to mix that in between the travelling, gaming, sports and social stuff. My latest “project” obviously is this blog.
Sooo, why this blog?
Finally some enlightenment on why this blog. I, obviously, use this blog to talk about things I like and that interest me. I also want to share my thoughts, work, passion and all other things with all of you. But… the reason at first that I started to build this blog is: to have some sort of database, backup or whatever you like to call it to ‘store’ and improve my scripts, solutions and other day-to-day work!
In all my years working as an IT professional I created tons of scripts with VBScript, PHP, PowerShell and more. I also made many website designs and logos in Photoshop. But for some reason I tend to loose half of it, because I don’t have a nice place to store them
This caused me to reinvent the wheel many times. Now you all think: why oh why don’t you store it on an eternal harddrive, make a nice raid setup at home or implement a SAN? Well… good suggestions, but these things tend to break down and besides that I often don’t have the time for it or I am just too lazy.
Now what is a better place to store your stuff than the (upcoming) Cloud Madness? I don’t have to worry much about it getting lost and it is always and everywhere stored. Even better is the fact that through this blog all of you help me to improve my creations. Win-Win!
What is in it for you?
Basically and hopefully a nice place to hang out and share your thoughts, opinions and whatnot with me, your friends and everybody else. Not only help me to improve my creations, but also get help with your own issues at work, the thoughts you have and the remarks you want to make.
And above all: Have tons of fun!
My appreciation for already a big amount of your time for reading this “short” introduction
I will try to do my best to keep it an interesting and qualitative read, to provide many useful creations and to help out where needed.
Thanks a lot for visiting hican.net and don’t forget to keep following me via Twitter, through contacting me or adding me on LinkedIn. Thanks again.
